While seen in Ice From The Sun (1996), and The Undertow
(2003), it was during the summer of 1992 that
writer/producer/actor (and everything else) Joseph Palermo
participated in the making of a music video shot in Betacam SP
and then, was the primary production technician on the
behind-the-scenes "making of" half hour S-VHS video produced on
the same music video. The "making of" video was broadcast
all over Canada. This led Joseph to believed he could
produce a feature in S-VHS for home video release.
Working at UPS at the time, he was ready to dedicate some of his
earnings towards this effort. A small windfall of
inheritance came his way. Joseph switched from purchasing
S-VHS to Hi8 video for production, and from January 1993 through
August of 1993, Joseph managed to pull together enough cast,
crew, and post-production ability to produce "Lord of the
Region." By the time he completed it, the market was
saturated with worse than "B-movie" horror movies and
distributors weren't interested. Worse yet, "Lord of the
Region" wasn't exactly a horror movie. It was more
drama/action/horror with special appearance by four time world
champion kick-boxer Earnest Hart, Jr. who distributors had no
clue about. No one was willing to take a chance.
That was 1993-94.
Now, in 2008, with the digital universe at hand and some
re-editing, "Lord of the Region" is set for digital download
sale. Visit the pictures and back-story of the shooting of
a scene below, and then support the makers (the cast and crew
are set to earn from the sales of this movie, not just the
producers!) by making a purchase for only $4.99.

The scene was a
fairly simple one. The character of Reverend James Prince
(Earnest Hart, Jr.) is working to follow through on his divine
vision of stopping the opening of a dimensional portal that
alleges to take the "higher vibrational" human to a place to
test for and become a LOTR (Lord of the Region) for a
particular region on Earth. Prince believes this to be a
ruse to allow a dimensional opening for the entry of Satan's
dominions. In the scene being discussed, this is where, in
the movie, Prince is going carefully through the house looking
for the primary evil, sometimes vampire Elliot DelRidge (played
by Rob Wisdom).
Fight choreographer and Chinese Kenpo master Tom Pieper (left)
explains to director of photography David Berliner (with camera,
also DP on Eric Stanze's "Ice From The Sun") and director Joseph
Palermo (right, also played Buck in "Ice From The Sun.") how he
sees things happening. This first shot entails the
character of James Prince opening the door to reveal a huge man
holding a smaller man while the vampire hooker feasts. The
huge man and vampire hooker see Prince and the huge man attacks
Prince while the vampire hooker makes her escape. In the
short struggle, Prince applies his martial arts training and eye
gouges the huge man back into the room. Satisfied with the
visual concept, Palermo retreats to get the principle actors
make-up for the shot ready.
Once lights have been set and some footage shot, stunt actor
Mark Lunato (back) looks on as Pieper and Berliner review the
look in the steadi-cam monitor along with the vampire victim
extra.
Actor Michelle Sparks has her first make-up application on.
Elliot has a nasty bite, eh!
Palermo applies the traditional mouth corners "blood" trickle
representing Michelle's having feasted on the victim.
"These teef feel funny!" Michelle is ready for her shot.
Joseph returns to the shot location to hear the choreography
being given by Piper to actor Earnest Hart, Jr. Daughter
of Dolores Lococo, owner of Lococo Bed and Breakfast in the City
of Saint Charles looks on.
Cast and crew, including Lococo daughter, review the shot.
It's a take!
Having completed the "attack and eye gouge" shot, Joseph now
gets Lunato ready for his next shot involving the leg take down
and snapping of neck shot.
Joseph has prepared Hart, Jr's hand make-up for the scene.
Hart, Jr. always does a little meditating before a shot.
Having taken the take down and neck snap shot, Joseph reviews
the footage. "Video is electronically based." says Joseph.
"While the odds are extremely small of something having gone
wrong, I check each and every shot to make sure I have what I
think I have. In the old days, this would be called
viewing dailies because it would take until the evening for
the labs to process and render a viewing print."
The take down and neck snapping shot completed and okayed by
Joseph, Mark works to clean up.
Lococo Bed and Breakfast owner Dolores Lococo is in the movie as
a victim. She and Earnest Hart, Jr. keep the shooting set
fun.
